Hello.
This is Tocchan.
Have you ever noticed something unexpectedly come back to you when you smell something in town? Although it is vague, it is three-dimensional and has emotional memories. How does it smell?
Coffee is a beverage to savor with effort
I like passing by coffee shops that roast their own coffee in the underground shopping malls of large towns. It smells so good. Ah, I wish I could stay in this space forever. It’s my favorite smell, and I wish it had an incense like this.
It’s been about three years since I started roasting at home. I roast 2-3 times a month only for me. The roasted beans are ground in a hand mill every morning and drip brewed.
Until I was in my 40s, it wasn’t something I was particularly interested in, although I had some feelings of admiration for it. Drip, hand mill, and home-roasted. Coffee itself was never my favorite drink. Black coffee was meant to be enjoyed with great effort.
My friends who drank black at cafes looked mature, the strong instant coffee served in small paper cups at community gatherings had to be added with sugar and milk, and the coffee in cans and plastic bottles… It’s a sweet, coffee-flavored drink, and I wondered who would buy black canned coffee.
Hand grip coffee roaster
However, the smell of roasting in the underground shopping mall is one of my favorite things in this world. Moreover, a life with coffee was an essential essence of my ideal grandfather image.
If so, it might be fun to take the leap and try roasting your own food. An approach that starts with interesting actions and moves toward the entrance to a deep world. Attempt.
While I was cultivating this idea in the back of my mind, I came across a coffee roaster from a non-electrified workshop .
For me, the phrase “lifetime” sticks with me, so a coffee roaster that can be used semi-permanently is appealing. At that time, without researching competing products, he purchased an affordable, small, and cute roaster, and took the first step towards becoming the correct grandfather.
However, in-house coffee roasting is actually another grand endeavor.
Secret attempts remain a secret
In France, there is something called “taste education.” When we went on a field trip, the teacher taught us about memory and the five senses.
Taste memory, smell memory, and sound memory are closer to the brain’s memory than visual memory. It is remembered more three-dimensionally and with emotion. In particular, the sense of smell is difficult to lose with age, and is an excellent memory recall device.
In programs at senior care facilities, people sometimes do exercises that use tastes and smells as cues to recall past (favorable) memories.
Come to think of it, the smell of someone’s perfume that I passed on the street brought back memories of my first overseas trip with my family, and the smell of the sukiyaki pot in my parents’ storage when I took it out of the box reminded me of the food table at that time. I remember. there is. I have experience.
My family doesn’t go out or travel a lot, and we don’t take many photos. We have a small farm fields, raise chickens, make mayonnaise, and bake bread. We live each day while sharing the pleasures we make at home. Sitting down to the dinner table with family, the scenery that is commonplace in your home is an irreplaceable happiness, and let’s make the daily happiness that cannot be captured in photos a memory of your favorite smells. Such a magnificent project.
When children leave the nest and walk through the underground malls of large cities, what kind of scenery do they remember? I hope that will cheer them up at that time.
I keep those thoughts a secret and continue grinding beans today.
Have a nice day today!
