Hello.
This is Tocchan.
Today, I will make 10 days worth of meals.
In rural areas, there are more coin-operated rice mills than convenience stores.
In rural areas, fresh rice bran is an easily available material.
There are more coin rice polishing machines than there are convenience stores, and you can get fresh rice bran for free.
The day before I make the meal, I receive about 9 kg.
It’s been almost two years since I started making chicken feed.
If you have 15 chicks, the cost will be beyond the scope of your hobby if you purchase compound feed from a home center !
I was also concerned about the unique smell of chicken feed, so I decided to make my own chicken feed.
Secret recipe revealed!
My chickens live on this food and food scraps from the kitchen every day.
They seem to like freshly made bread, which is moist and has a nice aroma similar to when bread is fermented.
Aim for 110g (dry weight) per chicken per day . There are 15 Chickens, so they weigh 1.6 to 1.7 kg a day.
Material
- Rice bran 9kg
- Waste wheats 8.3kg
- Waste soybeans 2.2kg
- 10 liters of water
- Oyster shell 0.3kg
- Mixed feed 0.8kg
- Fish meat 0.3kg
Procedure
- Soak soybeans in water overnight
- Mix all ingredients except ① well on a blue sheet.
- Make a mountain, make a well in the center, and pour in ①. About one-third
- Mix well and once it’s incorporated, divide it into two more parts and mix ①.
- Adjust the shape of the mountain and complete the preparation.
The next day, the temperature will be so high that steam will appear. It’s fermentation heat.
It has a nice fermented aroma, and chickens love it too. Moist and warm.
If possible, mix the whole mixture once in the morning and once in the evening for 3 days.
From around the 4th day, the water will be gone and you will feel dry.
The amount is 10 days worth of preparation at one time. When it runs out over 10 days, you prepare the next batch and start eating a new batch of bait the next day.
Increase self-sufficiency by making food
If you want to keep livestock, even on a small scale, you want to be self-sufficient in feed.
There is no need to keep them at home unless you want to keep them healthy and get healthy eggs and healthy meat.
material | Acquisition (purchase) frequency | Lot usage amount | how to get | Consideration |
---|---|---|---|---|
rice bran | Before preparation (3 times a month) | 9kg | Get it from coin rice milling machine | free |
Kuzumugi | Once a year after harvest (July) | 8.3kg | Buy at your local JA store | 3 cent/kg |
Waste soybeans | Once a year after harvest (January) | 2.2kg | Get it from a farmer you know | 10 eggs once a month |
oyster shell | several times a year | 0.3kg | Purchase at home center | $3/kg |
Compound feed | several times a year | 0.8kg | Purchase at home center | $20/20kg |
fish meat | Before preparation (3 times a month) | 0.3kg | Purchase at the supermarket | $0.5/100g |
It’s been seven years since I started raising chickens, longing to be self-sufficient.
We started with one waste chicken, and then expanded to two, then six, then 15 chickens.
Until I had 6 chicks, I bought mixed feed at a home center. The yolk was a beautiful deep orange color, and it looked and tasted great.
They grow well and lay lots of eggs with just mixed feed, but the problem was that the feed itself and feces (body odor?) had a unique odor, and it was expensive.
We now have 15, and we took this opportunity to learn about food and start working on getting materials.
Yoak are lemon yellow
The deeper the orange color of the yolk, the more appetizing it will be. Whether it’s egg-on-rice, Japanese fried eggs, or fried rice.
Lemon yellow doesn’t look good.
Since switching to homemade feed, the yolks have turned lemon yellow.
The color of the yolk changes depending on the color of the food it eats, so if you mix natural redness (such as paprika) with the food, it will become a deep orange color, but for now it’s lemon yellow.
What to aim for
It’s not about doing business.
If you have 15 chicks, you will get about 10 eggs every day, which is more than a family of five can consume.
When you receive vegetables from your neighbor’s grandmother, or as a small token of gratitude, wrap an egg in newspaper and give it to her.
“Is that okay? Something precious. Thank you.”
Some people buy it regularly, some people buy it 2 to 4 times a month, and some people buy it when they accumulate 20 eggs.
We receive enough money to cover the cost of food.
At first, I started raising one chicken out of curiosity, but my goals have changed.
What to do next
It’s been about 2 years since we purchased 15 chicks.
They start laying eggs when they are about 6 months old, and for about a year, 15 chicks will lay 12 to 15 eggs every day.
In the past few months, I’ve had as little as 5 and as many as 10. Maybe it was because it was hot.
The egg production rate begins to decline after about two years.
It takes six months for babies to start giving birth, so now is the time to start thinking about the next generation.
Should I increase or decrease?
What should we do with the 15 chicks currently?
The first one and two chicks were killed by weasels.
I squeezed the previous 6 chickens, and they were thankfully delicious.
I don’t have much skill or experience, so even with 6 chicks, it was quite difficult both physically and mentally.
I was a little hesitant when it came to 15.
I’d like to find another way.
Although there are some challenges, it seems that there is no option to stop raising chickens in the garden .
Consult with my family.

When we purchase chicks, they are delivered in a cardboard box, and one lot consists of 20 baby chicks.
